Historic Houses of Loviisa Town Walk

Embark on a captivating stroll through Loviisa, where you’ll immerse yourself in the charm of yesteryears. This historic route meanders amidst Loviisa’s old houses, offering a glimpse into a bygone era. Traverse the lively city center, verdant parks, and scenic coastal stretches.

Loviisa’s roots trace back to 1745, with the town’s inception as Degerby, a border and fortress town on the land of Degerby Manor in Pernaja. This historical moment arose from the Treaty of Turku in 1743, shifting the border between Russia and Sweden to the westernmost branch of the Kymijoki River at Ahvenkoski.

Originally named Degerby, the town acquired the moniker Loviisa in 1752 when King Adolf Fredrik of Sweden renamed it after his wife, Queen Loviisa Ulrika. Today, Loviisa proudly preserves numerous ancient structures, some dating back to its earliest days.

Loviisa’s Lower Town boasts iconic wooden houses, miraculously spared from the 1855 city fire. These well-preserved 17th-century urban quarters are unparalleled in Finland. The Degerby stables’ outbuilding, dating to the 17th century, has been transformed into a charming restaurant.

Wander the Lower Town streets year-round, marveling at the craftsmanship of yesteryear’s masters. Don’t miss the chance to explore courtyards and homes during the Historic Houses of Loviisa and Loviisa Open Gardens events, and be sure to visit the delightful boutiques and cafés.
