  • Sustainable Tourism on the East Coast of Finland

The development of sustainable tourism plays an important role in the Kotka, Hamina, and Loviisa region. We want to be part of making Finland a leading country in sustainable tourism. Therefore, we are looking at sustainable tourism as a long-term project to achieve our goals and continually work with our region’s municipalities and tourism operators.

Kymenlaakso, of which Kotka-Hamina is a sub-region, is part of the national Hinku network, aiming to reduce carbon emissions from its municipalities significantly. Therefore, as a regional tourism organisation, we are involved in helping achieve these targets in the tourism sector. In addition, tourism businesses also play an important role in sustainable development, so it is important to help, support and educate businesses towards a more sustainable future.

In addition to tourism’s environmental impact, our work also focuses on tourism’s social, cultural, and economic effects. Our aim is that tourism contributes to and preserves our region’s vitality and fine cultural heritage. We want tourists to enjoy the south-eastern coastal area, in all its authenticity, for many years to come.

Visit Kotka-Hamina is a signatory of the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism and is committed to reduce it’s greenhouse gas emissions. See our Climate Action Plan below.

Sustainable Travel Finland

The Kotka, Hamina and Loviisa region is part of Visit Finland’s Sustainable Travel Finland (STF) programme, which helps identify operators in the area who are committed to sustainable tourism. Visit Kotka-Hamina aims to have at least 51% of the businesses in this region be STF-labelled in the near future.

Tourism Businesses Involved in Sustainability Work

We encourage all businesses in our region to contribute to sustainable tourism development, and many here are already doing a lot of great work. However, we are constantly endeavouring to find even more ways to increase sustainability in all tourism business operations. Below are just a few examples of the great work some companies in our region are doing towards sustainability.

Sustainable Travel Packages

Our region offers various services for putting together multi-purpose travel or meeting packages, using products and services from responsible operators. Our professional tourism experts will be happy to help you by explaining more about the services offered in our region.
