Tour of Kirmusaari

Embark on a captivating two-hour kayaking tour along the Kymi River, Finland’s “Amazon.” This historic route unfolds the river’s diverse beauty, from calm riverbeds to wooded shores, offering a taste of Finland’s own “Amazon.”

While the main focus is paddling and leisure, the journey unveils layers of history. Following the Peace of Turku in 1743, border patrols were concentrated at Vähä-Ahvenkoski (Kirmusaari), where Swedish customs and redoubts were established. Russia later fortified the area, leaving remnants of the Kirmusaari redoubt.

Sairaalasaari, with an incomplete hospital from 1915, offers a glimpse into the past. Ahvenkoski Manor’s elegant 16th-century origins gave way to its current villa-like appearance, designed by Carl C:son Armfelt.

The Savukoski bridge, an engineering marvel built in 1926-1928, remains as a museum bridge, once a technical wonder of the world. Explore history and nature on this intriguing kayaking journey.
