History of Svartholm Sea Fortress

Svartholm Sea Fortres in Loviisa

Svartholm Sea Fortress, located just off the coast of Loviisa, is one of Finland’s most significant 18th-century coastal fortifications. It was built during the Swedish era to defend the eastern border against Russia and to serve as a naval base for the Swedish fleet. Construction began in 1748 based on plans by Augustin Ehrensvärd, the same engineer behind Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, located off the coast of Helsinki. That is why Svartholm is called the sister of Suomenlinna.

The fortress was designed as a bastion fortification, allowing different parts of the structure to support each other with defensive fire. Although its main structures were completed in the 1760s, the fortress was never fully finished.

Svartholm played an important role during the Russo-Swedish War of 1788–1790, functioning as a vital supply and support base for the Swedish navy. However, during the Finnish War in 1808, the fortress surrendered to Russian forces after a relatively short siege and without major battles.

Under Russian rule, the military importance of Svartholm declined, and the fortress was partly used as a prison in the 19th century. During the Crimean War in 1855, British naval forces destroyed the fortress, leaving it in ruins for decades.

Svartholm was rediscovered and gradually restored in the 20th century. Today, it is a protected cultural heritage site and a popular visitor attraction, offering a unique glimpse into Finland’s maritime military history in a beautiful island setting.
