Varissaari

Varissaari is a historic fortress island located just off the coast of Kotka and a popular outdoor destination as part of Kotka’s national urban park. The island offers various activities and features the magnificent Restaurant Vaakku, where you can indulge in beautiful sea views.

About 200 years ago, Varissaari was home to Fort Elisabeth, which protected the fortress town of Ruotsinsalmi, and its ruins can still be seen today. Additionally, a new pavilion showcasing artifacts from the Battle of Ruotsinsalmi, the largest naval battle in the Nordic countries, has been opened on the island. Varissaari’s shores offer unobstructed views of the battle area, and parts of the sunken frigate St. Nikolai and its cannons are also visible.

On Varissaari, you can enjoy the maritime scenery and atmosphere by sitting on the rocky shores, hiking, swimming in the sea, grilling, stand-up paddleboarding, or playing beach volleyball. Additionally, the sauna raft Kiulu offers a unique experience for archipelago travelers, with a gentle wooden sauna and rocking waves.

You can reach Varissaari in ten minutes from Sapokka aboard the fully wooden ferry M/S Klippan. Check the schedules on Restaurant Vaakku’s website.

With Varissaari’s RIB taxi boat, you can also reach other islands in the Eastern Gulf of Finland.
